Administering Organization: Institute for Recruitment of Teachers

"We empower talented underserved and underrepresented students and professionals to teach and serve as leaders in American education. We believe that teacher diversity is essential to educational excellence."

The IRT seeks to address the lack of diversity in the nation’s teaching faculties. Each year, 25-30 Interns are selected to participate in an intense four-week Summer Workshop at Phillips Academy. This program is ideal for college juniors and seniors who intend to pursue graduate study immediately upon completion of their undergraduate degree. Interns and faculty spend nine hours together each weekday in seminar discussions and activities. The summer program also includes lectures, writing conferences, films, and presentations. Students also prepare for the GRE and begin to work on their statements of purpose. Summer workshop participants receive a $1,200 stipend, travel expenses (for those traveling by plane or train), and room and board. This opportunity is open to undocumented students. IRT states on their FAQ page that “residency or citizenship is not a requirement. However, we have a strong preference for applicants who have a commitment to teach, counsel, and administrate at schools, colleges, and universities within the United States.”
